I am constantly on a quest to instill lifelong healthy habits for myself and my family. As a busy mom, I often find it challenging to make time to take the best care of me. I consistently put the needs of my family, friends, or even online priorities above my own personal needs. This is a struggle. This is my journey.
Learning to make me a priority and instilling 5 Simple Healthy Habits can help me on my journey to have healthy lifelong habits. I know these simple tricks. You do too. I am bringing these simple healthy habits back up to bring health awareness for women’s health… for me and you. Sometimes we need this simple reminder to keep us moving forward in our journey. I know I do.
I had a rare opportunity to run errands by myself. Sans kiddos. I ventured into my local Walgreens to find some essentials to help me feel like me again. I was looking for various women’s health items that were affordable and would help me further my healthy habits for myself and my family.
When I walked into my local Walgreens, I really liked how everything was easily labeled on each aisle. I was able to quickly glance above (near the ceiling) and down the row to find the type of products I was looking for. No wasted time for a mama who is always short on time.
I was on a search for items that I could share with you that drive health awareness for women. Finding products that promote healthy habits that we as busy moms can instill into our hectic lifestyles, so that we can be a healthy role model for our family. When we as mom choose to make ourselves a priority and embrace a healthy lifestyle… we set an example for those around us, we become healthier, our family is healthier and everyone wins.
5 Healthy Habits for Women’s Health
Water
Water is essential for your body to function properly. Water helps carry nutrients to your cells and aids in digestion. Proper hydration flushes {gross germs that your 6 year old brings home from kindergarten} toxins from your system, keeps blood clean and skin soft. It provides moisture for your ear, nose and throat tissues and lubricates joints and cushions vital organs. Water is NEEDED for our bodies to function and survive.
Move
Movement, of any sort, is a healthy habit everyone can stand behind. Whether you are choosing to challenge yourself to reach a specific number of steps each day, walk, run, bike, or hike. Finding an activity that you love that moves you forward, raises your heart rate and elevates your mood is a healthy choice.
When I am not running, I enjoy exploring and finding great adventures with my family. We enjoy biking and hiking while exploring the great outdoors. Movement, fresh air and togetherness are a few subtle ways I can teach health awareness and healthy lifestyle habits to my children.
Eat Whole Foods
There are days when we don’t eat all our vegetables and fruits… or even eat a well balanced whole healthy diet. However, when we do our best to eat the foods that are good for us sometimes we can still lack in certain nutrients. That is where taking a daily multivitamin can come in to play.
I am terrible at remembering to take my daily multivitamin. Sometimes they even hurt my stomach or make me gag. Yes. I said it. When shopping at Walgreens, I found these GUMMIES and had to try them. They are so yummy and the added benefit of taking a vitamin that tastes good and can help my skin, hair and nails grow… Score!
Sleep & Rest
We all know the importance of sleep. Yet, the majority of us are not getting enough rest. When our bodies are at rest and are sleeping, we are healing, recouping, and restoring our bodies for the next day. Sleep is essential and much needed. Finding time to rest and making sure we get the needed 6-8 hours of sleep a night will be key to help you end the crankies, sugar cravings, and potential weight gain. Get some rest.
Enjoy
As a boy mom, there is no shortage of giggles, laughs and moments to enjoy life. Choosing to enjoy those moments is the real kicker. Sometimes the sheer simple act of a water gun fight, jumping in the pool with the boys, or jumping on the trampoline can evoke joy in everyone involved.
Sometimes we can combine many of these simple healthy habits into one activity. Simply enjoying the outdoors, moving, and enjoying the moment with your loved ones is a simple way to produce those happy endorphin feelings! Healthy habits make healthy moms. Healthy moms raise healthy kids. Healthy = Happy.
Find something you enjoy that makes you happy. Do it. Don’t feel guilty. YOU need to be happy too! Breathe in the moment. Enjoy it. Savor the moment. When you take time for YOU and make these 5 small healthy habits changes… you will find that you will be not only healthier but chances are happier too!
Deborah Brooks @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
Definitely need to work on getting more sleep!
Rachel says
Yes. Amen. Me too. *Yawn*
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
Move is my favorite. Working on eating better.
Rachel says
I am in the same boat as you. I find that movement/fitness is easy for me… but eating healthy/whole foods is my struggle. 🙂
Heather (Where's the Beach) says
Great tips – especially the rest!
Rachel says
Thank you, Heather! 🙂
Shannon Schmid says
I need to give MYSELF a bedtime!
Rachel says
Haha! I agree. I just wish that life would shut down when the KIDS went to bed… so I could fully relax and not have to worry about the 110 things on my todo list that I hadn’t even touched during the day. 🙂
Rebecca Jo says
Oh sleep… how I struggle in that one. I do good to get 6 hours sleep…& that’s dicey sleep.
I need to find those gummy vitamins.
Rachel says
I think many of us struggle with sleep! And yes, these vitamins are super yummy (they actually satisfy my sweet tooth). 🙂
Linz @ Itz Linz says
YES YES YES!
Rachel says
Thanks for your support, Linz! 🙂
HilLesha says
I’ll definitely have to try these vitamins. The vegan multi-vitamins that I usually buy are hard to swallow at times. It doesn’t help that they taste weird, too. 😀
Rachel says
I have tried some vegan (super healthy) vitamins from my local health food store. They are hard to swallow and DO taste weird… but thankfully they don’t hurt my stomach like traditional vitamins do. Thankfully these chewable gummies don’t hurt my tummy and they taste great too!
Jesica H says
My husband would have me say to cut out all sugar is the best tip of all… as I’m sitting here struggling with the idea of buying a soda. I really want one, just trying to kick the habit!
Rachel says
Mine would say the same thing. Sugar *is* so bad for us. Yet… it tastes so good. I struggle with my own sugar addiction too. Always a work in progress. 🙂
melinda says
i’m good with sleep, i’m terrible with getting a good balance of food and water some days
Rachel says
Life gets busy and finding that balance of taking care of ourselves is the juggle.
Mellisa says
These are all great habits. I need to work on getting more sleep.
Rachel says
Thanks. Yes, sleep is key. There is always SOMETHING to do. 😉
Angela S says
I need to try those gummies with Biotin. My son was just telling me over the weekend that I should try a Biotin supplement to help with my sensitive skin. Really great post!
Rachel says
Thanks, Angela! I have read so many great things about Biotin that I was wanting to give it a go. Plus when I saw these strawberry flavored GUMMIES (that really do satisfy a sweet tooth craving), I had to give it a try. 🙂
Jenn says
I need to drink more water…and get more sleep. Aw heck. All of it!
Rachel says
Haha! Mega ditto. me too! Which is why I wrote it… I need all the reminders and kick in the pants I can get. 😉
Crystal Gibson says
I am failing at all five of these, right now. Thanks for the inspiration to take care of myself.
Rachel says
You are so welcome, Crystal! I struggle with these tips too… which is why I felt I needed to write them to help motivate/encourage myself too! 🙂
Anne says
Great habits! I gag on vitamins too, but I always thought gummy vitamins were for kids. I love the idea of gummies for me!
Rachel says
Yes, I had that misconception too for the longest time… but I have also read that many porto potties are FILLED with half digested vitamins because they don’t fully dissolve. 😉 So gummies are atleast chewed. haha 🙂 PLUS they taste good!
Digna D. says
Thanks for the tips. As someone who is on a mission to drop more weight and get in better overall shape, I will take any help I can get.
Rachel says
{hugs} Yes. I am on that same mission/journey. Sometimes just these small (simple) changes can yield lasting BIG results! 🙂 Best of luck to you in your weight loss journey!
Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting says
Ooh, I want to check out those gummies and that jar of coconut oil!
Rachel says
Haha! The gummies are yummy and the coconut oil is good for skin, nails… and HAIR!! I have read so many great uses for coconut oil! 🙂
Jennifer @ My Sweet Sanity says
I am terrible at sleep but not because I don’t want to go to bed. Two Autistic kids on sleep meds just to be able to fall asleep and a husband with sleep problems ensures my usual 3-4 hours of sleep and constant state of exhaustion.
Rachel says
Oh hugs… I can only imagine!! Have you tried using essential oils to help them rest/calm/peace before rest time? I have friends who swear by that method.
Shell Feis says
Great tips! I definitely feel the difference when I don’t drink enough water, especially living in the dry desert.
Rachel says
Yes!! Me too!! Water is key!
Cyndi @ MrsWrightWrites says
Thanks for the great tips. Eating water and resting are the hardest for me. I am really trying to focus on taking better care of me, while I’m caring for everyone else!
Rachel says
Yes. I totally understand and am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU on those struggles. Small steps. One small change at a time. 🙂
Toni says
Okay I know this is bad, but I love the kids flinstones vitamins LOL. These are all great habits to have.
Rachel says
Nope. Not bad… just a great palet! LOL I love the kids flinstones vitamins too 😉
Rebekah {honeyandcheese} says
I love how you worded this bit: “Healthy habits make healthy moms. Healthy moms raise healthy kids. Healthy = Happy.” It’s so true! We pass on both by training and example. (Although example still doesn’t make my 2-year-old enjoy broccoli. 🙂 )
Rachel says
Thank you, Rebekah! 🙂 And yes, my boys are STILL learning the art of healthy eating too 😉
Liz Mays says
If I take vitamins on an empty stomach, they’ll make me feel sick too. I usually have to wait a while.
Rachel says
I have a friend who suggested spreading out vitamins throughout the day… so not to take a bunch at the same time (on an empty stomach).
Robin {Mom Foodie} says
I do my best, but sometimes fall into a plump sloth-like state 😛
Rachel says
haha… we are all guilty of falling into a slump-like state 🙂
Kimberly Grabinski says
Overall we have a good handle on a healthy lifestyle. We struggle though with when we go to my son’s baseball games and what to do for dinner those days. It’s so easy to just buy the junk from the concession stand.
Rachel says
Yes! I wish there was an easy convenience drive through/session stand that had HEALTHY food for ya! 🙂
Michelle says
These are all such important tips. I have to admit I definitely need to work on the moving one more!
Rachel says
I totally understand, Michelle! I need to work on healthy eating more. 😉
Michelle says
I need to do more of ALL of these things…
Rachel says
🙂
Crystal says
I really need to drink more water. I just love the bubbly of soda, though.
Rachel says
Oooh I do love the bubbles from soda too!
Jamie says
Definitely drinking more water and getting enough sleep are two areas I struggle with. I’m getting better but there’s just not enough time in the day!
Rachel says
Oh Jamie, I totally hear you!!
Summer Davis says
So, there are a few things that make me happy. Painting makes me very happy. Dancing makes me very happy. Having sore muscles from a good workout, that also makes me very happy. Sadly, I haven’t done ANY of those things since March when I got a pretty significant concussion. I’m doing much better now, but getting back into the habit of going to the gym is impossible. And as far as dancing goes, where does a 32 year old woman go to take contemporary dance? I don’t even know. I also enjoy having healthy hair (not happenin’) so I need to get some of those delicious gummy vitamins from Walgreens that everyone’s been raving about! #client
Rachel says
I love to dance too… but as a mom of three small children (and happily married), I question where I can go to get my wiggles out 🙂 And yes, the gummy vitamins are really yummy! I could use strong hair and nails 🙂
