I have been a runner all my life. As a young girl, I remember running laps around my house trying to beat my previous time. As a mom, I enjoyed training and racing for distance races with my friends. My running experience and adventures have afforded me many great opportunities and running memories.
I have enjoyed running 5Ks with my children. I have fond memories of running half marathons in beautiful scenic locations, races with fun energetic vibes, and races with friends. I have had the privilege and opportunity to run three full marathons, running in epic once-in-a-lifetime races such as CIM, Los Angeles Marathon and The Boston Marathon. I have fond memories running in two Ragnar Adventure Races with friends.
When I look back on my running career, I smile fondly.
However, I am now sidelined and forced to have a new outlook on fitnes.
Running is currently a no-go for me.
Sometime in the past year, I injured my knee. I noticed pain when I walked and most noticably when I ran. I had shooting pain when I twisted my knee or knelt to bend.
I visited the doctor and at first he thought it was “me getting old” and it was arthritis of the knee. After an MRI, it was confirmed that I have a slight tear in my medial meniscus.
Deciding to pause surgery, as the beginning of the school year was underway, I opted for a cortozone shot. A bandaid to ease the knee pain. It worked! For 3 months.
I am back to square one, hesitating on getting another shot in the knee. Missing running. Missing the cardio high one gets from a good workout.
When talking to my orthopedic doctor, I was encouraged to try biking. It is easier on the knee, while promoting movement, all while getting an amazing cardio workout.
I will admit, I was hesitant at first… because I identified as a runner… not a bike rider.
I currently have a free bike my son got off facebook marketplace. It is old. It squeaks. It is uncomfortable. But it works. I use it.
Spinning workouts kick my butt! My heart pumps hard. My sweat drips heavily. I achieve the cardio high I have been craving and missing.
While I may not be running, I am still running through life one day at a time. Today… I will be running (okay, walking) to the spin bike for my cardio workout.
