The past two weeks I have shared with you five random books that we are reading. These books are books we own, borrow from the library, or borrow from friends. We are always reading in our family. We spend time reading alone as well as reading together.
These books are special to me because they help keep me accountable with teaching my children our family morals, values and religion.
I am doing the study by Beth Moore, James: Mercy Triumphs, with a local church. I have been blessed by Beth’s teaching as well as challenged by the questions each day.
The boys and I are reading the top four books.
We try to start each morning, usually during breakfast, reading Sheila Walsh’s book God’s Mighty Warrior Devotional Bible. This cute and boy centered devotional has short and quick to the point messages. I really have been blessed by reading this devotional with the boys each morning because it gets our day started right, as well as gives us all something to think about before the hustle and bustle of the day begins.
During the day, I read The Jesus Story Book Bible to the little boys (and my oldest when he is home). The boys and I enjoy this story because it teaches the Bible in a fluid story. One plan, one story that leads up to Jesus. I get the biggest kick when my boys get excited for the “prince” to come!
We end the day reading two books. The first is a short easy little devotional to think about and begin discussions about their every day choices. We read 365 Bedtime Devotionals for Little Boys. This book is similar in nature as our morning devotional. The reading is short and sweet and usually tackles a subject that young children understand and experience during their day.
The last book is A Child’s First Book of Virtues. I am borrowing this from my sister in law, after she read and discussed this with her children. I have seen on homeschooling forums that you can do a thematic unit based on this book, but I have not gone that far *yet*. Each night I read a few stories from this book on a particular virtue (last night we talked about the virtue WORK). After each little story or poem we discuss what the author was trying to teach – the virtue. This book has helped open many interesting conversations with my boys… and has helped me see their heart and life through their eyes.
These books are not the only books we are reading in our family. These are just five random books that I have been reading a lot each day, and wanted to share with you. I have purchased (or borrowed) all of these books on my own accord, and all opinions are my own.
