A few weeks ago, I joined 4-H as they launched their “Grow True Leaders” campaign to address America’s need for well-equipped youth that are prepared to step into leadership roles. One thing that I love about 4-H is that they believe that every child has the potential to be a true leader, but need to be taught the life skills and given opportunities to be such. As a mom, I believe that it is my job to teach and instruct my boys to live up to their fullest potential. I love that the 4-H programs give young people the experiences they need to develop these skills.
The “Grow True Leaders” campaign focuses primarily on the importance of teaching kids leadership skills, and to encourage participation across the nation.
Our family enjoys spending time outdoors: hiking, biking, camping, and playing. Teaching the boys new man skills while out camping and hiking is exciting for the boys, as well as an excellent bonding opportunity between the boys and their Dad.
Whether the leadership skill being taught is how to work as a team to set up camp and set up the tent. (Trust me this is a leadership skill that can always use practice!)
Or perhaps my oldest son’s favorite lesson on fire safety and how to build a camp fire. My younger two boys are more interested in how to perfect their s’more.
Growing three true leaders while on vacation require lots of mini lessons and quality time. Raising my three boys to be a leader and appreciate and love nature is something that my husband and I are working on. It is a daily process.
