A few weeks ago, I was sent a super fun package of Qixels to enjoy with my boys and share my opinion with you. My youngest son really wanted this for his 6th birthday. It came just in time for him to open it up as one of his birthday gifts. He was super excited!
The past few days have been wet, cold, and dreary here in Kansas City. My boys are usually outside playing as much as possible, but with the weather the way it has been… it was a perfect opportunity to take our activity inside.
We got out all of our needed supplies: colored cubes, chosen design, fuse blaster and the turbo dryer. T-man was ready to go. The plan was simple enough. Place the colored cubes on the matching color mat.
One thing we found challenging was getting used to handling the small cubes. They are the size of what I consider little baby teeth (you know when your child loses his/her first tooth). Grabbing, positioning, and trying to set in place the small cube was cumbersome and challenging at first.
Once we got a group settled in snug next to each other, the rest were easier to set in place. There was a few frustrating moments, tears, and grumbling… from both of us… but once we got going it was very relaxing to continue with our creation.
After T-man positioned all of his colored cubes in place and was satisfied with how his creation looked, it was time to spray it official. We placed our Qixel on the turbo dryer and had fun spraying it with water to set in place.
A few quick sprays over our creation and a few spins on the turbo dryer… now we wait.
What is Qixels?
Qixels (pronounced “Quick-suls”) is a creative activity set that inspires kids to use their imagination with cubes that fuse together with a blast of water to create an 8-bit world of monsters, warriors, ninjas and more, all while stepping away from screens. With Qixels, Moose Toys has carved out the “craftstruction” category, the newest creative activity play pattern that appeals to boys too.
Qixels line is appropriate for ages five and up and is available at mass retailers this Fall, starting June 15 at Target and Toys R Us. The line range in price from $9.99 – $19.99.
Qixels encourages boys to step away from the screen and sparks their imagination to create an 8-bit world of monsters, warriors, ninjas and more. The unique play pattern in Qixels inspires boys to be creative and hands-on as they construct their favorite pixelated characters using the design templates and their own imagination.
My boys (ages 6, 7, 9) all enjoyed creating their own 8-bit creation. It is not a quick craft as it took time, patience, and concentration to place their colored cubes carefully to create.
The box says for ages 5 and up… but I would recommend it for children a little older with more hand/eye coordination. It can be extremely frustrating for young children (and their adult) at first when they can’t get their cubes in place. That being said, with practice and understanding how the cubes handle, with practice and time (patience) everyone of my boys got in their groove and enjoyed creating.
I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.
