Technology is amazing and it provides us with instant information at our finger tips. Whether we are using our smart phones, tablet, laptop or desktop, we are using digital media every day. My boys love the days they earn media time to play on their tablets. They get to enter and play games, read books, and drive pretend race cars during their tablet play.
I love technology too and use it daily. However, I will admit that I am a paper and pen girl when it comes to my planner and books. There is something about the feel of paper organization, that I am not sure I will ever completely go digital.
When thinking about my boys future, the thought occurred to me when it came to textbooks and digital media. What are some things that they would miss out on and never know about? Digital media is cool and awesome… but so are textbooks!
5 Things About Textbooks Kids Would Miss With Digital Media
-
They would miss out on their creative outlet by creating book covers for each text book out of brown paper bags.
-
There would be no need for character themed, fuzzy, or magnetized book marks.
-
They would miss out on finding out who had the book before you, by reading the signature name content at the front of the book.
-
They won’t know the suffering of carrying 15lbs of text books in their backpack every day.
-
They would not be able to really use the excuse that their dog ate their homework (or textbook).
School has been back in session for a few weeks now. Hopefully your back to school routine is fully established and your family is working like a well oiled machine. I know for me and my boys, we are still working through the kinks of our morning routine as well as time management with getting homework done in a timely manner. It will come with practice.
Follett is launching #FallBackToSchool, a campaign focused on how parents and children can prepare to head back to school. Even though school is back in session for most of us, checking out and reading the tips on the hashtag are great all year long.
The goal of the #FallBackToSchool campaign is to share tips and tricks for heading back to school and readjusting to school schedules. Check out this cool info graphic of tips the high school graduate heading off to college.
Ah I do miss the good old college days! Those were so fun, carefree… and fun! For more ideas on back-to-school visit Follett and follow the hashtag #FallBackToSchool for more information.

One of my favorite things about getting textbooks was looking to see who used it beforehand, what kind of highlights/notes/drawings they left….I would be so bummed if all of my books were electronic.

Books are so important although I use digital media every single day and sometimes all day I still love to curl up with a good book now and again. Like you I also do all of my editorial calendars and things on paper and sometimes even write out blog posts when I’m working on an idea.

These are good points. I remember my kids making creative book covers for all of their classes.

I must admit I’m old school with some things. I still like my lists for shopping and errands on paper. I still like to have book in my hands when I read. I’m with you all the way!

You just can’t stop using the hardback and weather-worn textbooks in order to get that full school experience! Although, I must admit that being able to download textbooks is a very convenient thing to do and has saved me from several long waits at bookstores!

I still prefer the old ways…books and pens…there’s just something so lovely about holding a book. Digital era have their positive and negatives for sure 🙂

I agree with you, I’m all about writing with a pen and paper I have a planner that I swear by and I drag it around everywhere I go.
My kids school hasn’t gone digital and I’m so thankful. I also drag my kids to the library and they check out 30+ books. I love that they still love to do that.

School sure is different now! I remember those good old book covers:-). Also, I know you can still highlight on a screen, but it doesn’t give me the same satisfaction as highlighting in a textbook!

i just like the feel of a real book. I see the benefit in both but think it’s sad we’re moving away from traditional books.

It took me a long time to come to the dark side of digital media. I love real books, but I’ve found I love ebooks even more. My daughter is in a couple of college courses in her high school, and we had to buy ebook codes, and it’s so easy for her to study practically anywhere.
