I have been searching for new healthy recipes to help increase my protein, as well as dinner favorites that my family will eat. I have found a crowd favorite with my homemade BBQ meatballs. I am sure you will find a healthier version on the web somewhere, but I can guarantee that this recipe is super yummy!
Homemade BBQ Meatballs
Ingredients
- MEATBALLS:
- 3 lbs. hamburger
- 2 cups oatmeal
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1 can (13 oz) condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoon chili powder
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- SAUCE:
- 2 cups ketchup
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
Instructions
- SAUCE: Combine sauce ingredients. Heat until sugar dissolves.
- MEATBALLS:Mix well and roll into balls.
- Pour Sauce over balls.
- Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees in 9x13" pan.
- Suck off grease with baster our pour off.
This recipe is one of my boys (and husband’s) favorite comfort food meals. I hope you try it with your family and have success with it too!

I am not a big fan of red meats since it is very costly to get a good lean to fat ratio. You could replace the hamburger with ground turkey or lean chicken breast which typically have a higher quality of lean protiens. It seams like I (we) use chicken/turkey as a replacement for just about every receipe that calls for meat.
