I am almost to beginning my taper for my first full marathon. I see my miles decreasing and trust my training. That being said, my midweek runs are becoming more doable to run with the kiddos again.
On Monday, I ran an easy 2 miles outside taking advantage of the cooler, crisp, fall temperature. I opted to run with the two of my kiddos while the older two were in class. T-man loves running in the jogger, and Daisy-dog was eager to explore and walk.
However, I was not going to walk. I needed to run. Just a short and quick 2 miles. I thought my 9 year old girl could do it. I wasn’t running super fast… but I was running.
She did great the first mile. Keeping up and running comfortably next to the jogger. However, as soon as we hit the second mile she started slowing and needing to stop. This shocked me. My super hyper-active dog is slowing. She is getting old.
It is Thursday morning, and it seems that all Daisy-dog has wanted to do the past few days is lay quietly in her crate… and sleep. Almost like that one two mile run completely wore her out for the week.
Could it be I pushed her too hard? Is her running days over? Is she now a slow walk around the neighborhood with the kids type doggy now?

My Weimaraner will be 9yo soon and she’s slowing down. When she begins running a bit behind me rather than with me, I can tell that she’s getting tired. Sometimes I stop running a minute and she’s ready to go again. Other times, we walk back home. Hoping yours will have the energy for many more runs and walks!

My german shepherds are 3 and 4 and still love to run with me and my husband. I get so sad thinking about the day when they are too old to run with us. I have no answers for how you know when they are too old… but if she hasn’t been doing much since, maybe she is sick or not feeling well?
