‘Tis the season for giving. Or at least that is what I am trying to teach my children. This time of year my children get so caught up in the media hype of give-me give-me. They fail to see how they are blessed.
In an attempt to teach our children the gift of generosity and giving, we take part in the Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child each year. We brave the stores and allow the boys to carefully pick items out to give to their special boy friend for Christmas.
This is a hard pill to swallow for the children ages 4 and under. Picking out items that they love for another individual who they do not know, yet they pray for, is a hard concept for them. But we do it anyway.
One of our family traditions is to pack a box for a special friend who this will be his first Christmas gift. A gift where he can hear about the gift of salvation and our Lord. What an amazing way to share the gospel to young children… through toys and a gift just as Christ was the ultimate gift to us!
As you can tell by the photo above, we are still learning the art of giving. It is a hard pill to swallow knowing that you are no longer owner of the super cool cars, super heroes, noise makers and musical toothbrush inside the box.
It is my prayer that, one day, my children will look forward to giving to others instead of focusing on their own needs. That they will be thankful for all that God has blessed them with, and choose to bless others.
Have you participated in Operation Christmas Child?
